First Snow - an ambient winter mix

Time for another winter mix.

Just like last year's mix, this playlist is filled with songs that have certain keywords in the title. So every tune will have one of these words...snow, winter, cold, frozen, ice, or freezing, in the title.

Most of the songs are either 2006 releases or new to me in 2006.

Enjoy and keep warm.

Best of 2006

Looking back on 2006, I guess it was another pretty good year for music. I like doing lists like this because it makes me resurrect cd's that I haven't listened to recently. Like the fabulous RF - Views of Distant Towns. I had almost forgotten that it came out in 2006.

I've noticed as the years have gone by, that my "best of" lists contain less and less ambient music. Now, a lot of the releases on this list have ambient qualities, but are not exactly ambient music per se. This year Scott Solter, Andrew Chalk & Forest Fang fill my traditional ambient quota in the list.

There was no way I could keep the list to a top ten. So here is my list, in no particular order, of the best of 2006(I reserve the right to add to it whenever I feel like it).
Please add your own lists in the comments section.

  1. Rf - Views of Distant Towns
  2. Christopher Willits - Surf Boundries
  3. Burial - st
  4. Scott Solter - One River
  5. Yellow 6 - The Beautiful Season has Past
  6. Triosk - The Headlight Serenade
  7. Forest Fang & Carl Weingarten - Invisibilty
  8. Helios - Eingya
  9. Andrew Chalk - Goldfall
  10. Clint Mansell & Mogwai - The Fountain Soundtrack
  11. The Necks - Chemist
  12. Svalastog - Woodwork
  13. Ceptual - Shifts Personal
  14. Halma - Back to Pascal
  15. Johann Johannsson - IBM 1401
  16. Loscil - Plume
  17. Marsen Jules - Les Fluers

String Theory

Woo hoo! I fixed the hosting problem and this mix is back on line. This one is devoted to orchestral tunes.

Most of the tunes have a similar ambient feel. Some are repetItive, some are dreamy, some are dense, some are light, some are long, some are short. All of them are excellent neo-ambient-classical-orchestral tunes.

enjoy

Autumn Mix

Here's another mix with a totally uncreative title, but at least that keeps things simple & easy to understand.

As the title suggests, this is a mix for autumn. As I have done with other mixes, I narrowed my musical choices by limiting potential songs to those with certain keywords in the title. So all the song titles in this mix contain words such as colors, fall, autumn, leaves, September, etc.

Piano Mix

The title is an obvious give-away about this mix.

Over the past few years there has been a resurgence of fine acoustic music. Whether it's Xela adding acoustic guitar to his glitchy sound or Swod using large doses of piano combined with electronics, acoustic instruments have made for some incredibly beautiful albums recently.I wanted to do an acoustic mix then decided to narrow it further by concentrating on piano tunes, some acoustic, some electronic, some romantic, some melancholic. All of it, hopefully, enjoyable.

Guitar Treatments

Finally a new mix. Just like the piano mix, this one is fairly obvious from the uncreative title. All the tunes are guitar based instrumentals, ranging from the floating ambience of Manual to the treated pickings of John Fahey. It helps to limit my choices, so most of the selections are fairly recent releases(at least back in 2006 they were new).
I believe this new link works, right-click to download.... Guitar Treatments

Quiet Night, Quiet Stars

Here's another stargazing mix. Just like "Tea Time At Eno's House", this was created for stargazing in northern Wisconsin.

Because I have so much music that would be considered "space" music, I decided to narrow the search by using songs that had appropriate terms in the titles. So words like star, sky, moon & night come up a lot. Just to keep things interesting I threw in a few vocal tunes as well. I hope you all enjoy it.
